Master of the Ocean 2021

Team Carambola Surf House wins the 2021 Master of the Ocean-contest in Cabarete.

Cabarete, on the northcoast of the Dominican Republic, is now officially named the country’s “Capital of Wind and Surf”. In his nomination speech on September 19, Tourism Minister David Collado called the city a “wild, beautiful, free, independent and bohemian destination”.

Master of the Ocean 2021 “Four Sports – One Champion”: During 4 days elite athletes from 12 nations competed in 4 disciplines to be crowned this year’s Master of the Ocean: surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and SUP Stand Up Paddle.

This year, the annual sports event had been moved from February to September. It took place 14 to 18 September 2021 at Playa Encuentro west of Cabarete in the Puerto Plata province.

The 2021 Master of the Ocean is supported by the ministries of Tourism, Environment, Public Health and Defense, American Airlines, and Cabarete businesses.

Master of the Ocean: Elite athletes and a great surf location

The competitors form teams of 4, one in each specialty. The athletes came from all around the world: Manuel Selman from Chile, 3time Latin American Champion, who was among the top 20 in Tokyo 2020. Windsurfer Brian Talma, Barbados’ Olympic icon. Dominicans Papito Santana, Joselito del Rosario and Carlos David competed for the Dominican Republic. Marius Hermann flew in from Germany, representing the island of Sylt, Germany’s surf and windsurf mekka. Also competing from Germany: Valeska Schneider, German Vice Champion Rapid Surfing. From the Dominican Republic, the French professional watersports athlete and fitness coach Audrey Meyer was again on the spot and won with her Team Carambola Surf House. Also on the spot Italian Pro Kiter Samuela Mulé. Canada sent Pro SUP Surfer Guillaume Authier and from Spain, Imma Nin Franch, Pro Kiter and Mexican champion, faught for the title.

Wing foiling in Cabarete

For the first time, the organizers also brought a master class on “wing foiling” to the event, the new trend water sports, a mix of kite and windsurfing.

Cabarete icon and long-time resident Marcus Böhm from Germany, owner of 321 Take Off surf school, created the event 18 years ago. The passionate windsurfer came in 1990 to Cabarete and still lives his dream there.

The Master of the Ocean is an outdoor event held in a large beach area right on the Atlantic ocean, with lots of sun and tropical winds. The organizers work closely with the Ministries of Public Health, Defense, Environment and the tourist police CESTUR to ensure that all protocols are followed.
