The school in Santo Domingo is located in the university quarter, just across from the country’s largest university which is also the oldest university of the Americas: the UASD (Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo). The central location of the Institute makes it easy to seek out and explore many places of interest. The ancient and historical part of the town, the Zona Colonial, is just a 10-minute drive from the school. All centers of social or cultural life, like cinemas, museums, theaters, galleries, sports centers, discos, and bars, can be easily reached by public transportation.
You will enjoy the relaxed, family-like atmosphere at the school. The class and communal rooms are furnished in a simple, Caribbean style. A small garden surrounds the building; the terraces and a cozy cafeteria are open to all students for relaxation and exchange of experience. During office hours, the students have free wifi internet access to surf the web, share their experiences with friends and followers on their social media channels.
Within walking distance from the school are many student hang-outs, including street cafes, the university library, kiosks and small restaurants. Here, you have plenty of opportunity to come into contact with Dominican students and continue practicing your Spanish language skills.
Housing and Meals:
Students live in a typical Dominican middle-class family home with their hosts, where they will experience complete immersion into the Spanish language and culture. The host families provide breakfast and dinner daily; often neighbors and other family members stop by for a visit.
Lunch is not included in the program fee to leave flexibility for those students who prefer to eat on their own terms during the day and inbetween classes. There are plenty of local comedores (small eating places with typical Dominican food) and little supermarkets (colmados) in the schools’ vicinity where one can serve oneself at a decent cost for a meal or snack. A typical Dominican lunch called “La Bandera” including rice, beans, chicken, and a salad costs about USD 4.-
In addition to a day-trip to a nearby Caribbean beach, you will have other activities included in the program fee to experience the history, culture and social life of Santo Domingo: an evening with live music at the ruins of the 16th century monastery San Francisco, a tour through the Old Town of Santo Domingo, a typical Bachata/Merengue dance class, and an educational field trip to a local market.
You can choose to split your program and view two very different faces of the Dominican Republic: studying 2 weeks at the IIC campus in Santo Domingo and the other 2 weeks at the IIC campus in the beach town of Sosua on the north coast of the DR. The school in Sosua is surrounded by a large tropical garden, located in a residential area right in the city center in 5 minutes walking to shops, supermarkets, restaurants, and to the beach. During the first 2 weeks of your program in Santo Domingo, you will stay with a host family (incl. half-board); lodging during the 2nd part of your program at IIC Sosua is arranged in the Students Residence (with breakfast). Travel from Santo Domingo to Sosua by bus is incl. in program fee; also included: 5 activities. If you fly into and out of the same airport (International Airport Las Americas in Santo Domingo SDQ), the travel from Sosua back to the airport in Santo Domingo (by bus & taxi) can be arranged through IIC at a surcharge of USD 80.-
