Mark your calendars! From September 17 to 21, 2025, Cabarete will once again become the arena for one of the world’s most exciting ocean sports festivals: the Master of the Ocean. The competition celebrates its 20th edition this year.
The Only “Decathlon of Water Sports” in the World
Master of the Ocean has grown into a benchmark event in the international sports calendar. It is the world’s only five-discipline watersports championship: surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, stand-up paddle (SUP), and wing foil. Events are held at Playa Encuentro (surf and SUP) and Cabarete Beach (kite, windsurf, and wing foil).
Master of the Ocean: Uniting Athletes and Ocean Lovers
This year’s edition brings together around 70 elite athletes from 17 countries. They are competing for a prize pool of nearly US$20,000. Participants can compete individually for the Overall title, or in teams of five riders for the Team Champion title.
Beyond the athletic spectacle, Master of the Ocean is a cultural celebration that highlights the Dominican Republic’s rich heritage. Visitors can expect many immersive experiences, along with live performances from international DJs and Dominican bands.
The Caribbean Capital of Watersports
Cabarete has the reputation to be the Caribbean capital of watersports. The natural conditions of Playa Encuentro’s surf breaks and Cabarete Bay’s consistent trade winds provide the perfect backdrop for this anniversary edition.
“Master of the Ocean is more than a competition. It is a celebration of the ocean, of diversity, and of community,” says founder Marcus Böhm. “Reaching our 20th edition is proof of the passion that unites athletes and ocean lovers from around the globe.”
The competition is organized by Happy Dolphins DR. The association is dedicated to lifeguard training, water sports instructor education, and ocean conservation. It is supported by a wide network of sponsors and partners, amongst them the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism, several airlines and hotel cooperations, Listín Diario, Banreservas, and the German Embassy in Santo Domingo.
Master of the Ocean has been a driving force for regional development for over two decades. Over the years, the event has attracted elite athletes from around the world, boosting both tourism and environmental awareness.
