Sosua – The City

Sosua’s unique location and history

Sosua lies on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. It is located between Puerto Plata and Cabarete. The International Airport of Puerto Plata, which serves the entire area, is only about a 10-minute drive away.

The small tourist town, home to 12,000 inhabitants, is known for its beautiful beaches and water sports facilities. They can be enjoyed all year round: the temperatures stay around 90°F (32°C) in the summer months and 80°F (27°C) in winter.

Sosua’s main beach, Playa Sosua, is one of the finest beaches in the Dominican Republic: one kilometer of soft, golden-yellow sand, sprinkled with coconut and Flamboyant trees. It is tucked in a cove sheltered by coral cliffs and has crystal-clear water, ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving.

At the one end of the Sosua bay is EL BATEY, an area with residential streets, gardens, restaurants, shops, and hotels. Many names and houses testify to the town’s Jewish history: in the 1930s and 1940s several hundreds of Jewish refugees flew from Europe to build themselves a new existence here.

At the other end of the bay lies LOS CHARAMICOS, formerly a sleepy fishing village. Over the years it has converted into a business and residential area for Dominicans who have moved there to seek work around Sosua. The ambiance is typical Dominican: You will find tin-roof shacks, vegetable stands, packed little shops, and music everywhere; the typical Dominican everyday life. The so-called “comedores” serve excellent fresh fish dishes.

Cabarete – Surfer’s Paradise

Only 15 minutes east of Sosua is Cabarete, one of the best wind- and kite surfing spots in the world. Since 2003, Cabarete challenges the world’s most skilled surfers, wing-foilers and SUP-paddlers in its one of a kind-competition: “ The Master of the Ocean”.

Everything revolves around the six kilometers of Cabarete Beach. Here, you will meet mainly an international young scene that enjoys relaxing in the sun as well as being active, playing beach-volleyball, or partying together at night in one of the bars on the beach.
