Study Group from WWU at IIC

WWU at IIC – welcome back, Students and Faculty from Fairhaven College @Western Washington University, Seattle! We are happy to have you here with us at IIC for another intensive and inspiring Interdisciplinary Program on Spanish Language and Public Health in the Dominican Republic, led by Professor Hilary Schwandt.

The group started off with a week full of Spanish language classes, a visit to Clinica INCART plus expert talks with Dr. Adrian Puello and Jonathan Soto, and lots of cultural experiences at IIC in Santo Domingo: learning more about Dominican culture and identity, preparing their own Dominican “empanadas” and learning how to dance Bachata and Merengue.

Next stop on their study abroad program is Sosua on the north coast. During the next 6 weeks at IIC in Sosua, the students will have lots of opportunities to practice their Spanish. In addition, they will intensively work with our partners at the #KerolleInitiative of Community Health, doing public health projects on different topics like women’s health, epidemiology, water treatment and more, with lots of research, field studies, and PH education in Haitian/Dominican rural communities. Additional lecture and study work will be provided by PH expert and founder of the Initiative, Dr. Reginald Kerolle.

Follow their journey until March 4th our Social Media Channels, on Instagram and Facebook.

Program ‘FAIR337L: The purpose of this semester program is to provide students with Spanish language instruction at their particular level of competency and to examine how race, culture, and health have been experienced among peoples in and from the Caribbean. Particular emphasis will be placed on the various ways in which racial/cultural/health identities are influenced and complicated by questions of gender, class, religion, and sexuality.

The 7-week Spanish language learning and culturally immersive #PublicHealth #StudyAbroad Program is the result of a partnership between Instituto Intercultural del Caribe #IICSpanishSchool, WWU’s #FairhavenCollege and the #KerolleInitiative for Community Health.

Instituto Intercultural del Caribe IIC and Fairhaven College Western Washington University connects over ten years of collaboration and friendship. This is the 4th group on an immersion study abroad program at IIC in the Dominican Republic. IIC hosted its first WWU group in 2010, led by Professor Lawrence Estrada.
