Dominican chefs are proving to be among the best in the world.

Chef Paulette Tejada just won the prestigious gastronomic reality show “Chopped Castaways” on the Food Network, once again bringing Dominican cuisine to the forefront. She becomes the first Dominican to win a competition of this nature. The specialized reality show challenged four chefs to survive and cook on a remote island in Thailand using limited tools and rustic cooking methods.

Tejada took home a hefty sum of money for her efforts under these difficult circumstances. While standard Chopped episodes typically award US$25,000 or US$50,000 for specialized tournaments, this specific survival spin-off (Chopped Castaways) featured a much larger US$100,000 grand prize given the extreme conditions the chefs had to endure on the island. The intense finale required her to cook a full meal over an open fire using scarce ingredients.

The three-chef jury (celebrity judges Maneet Chauhan, Scott Conant, and Chris Santos) awarded her for her creativity, technique, and ability to perform during the whole season. Not a newcomer to the cooking scene, Paulette Tejada is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) and earns her living as a private chef in New York City, where her client list is dotted with celebrities and A-list names.

Dominican Chefs put Dominican flavors on the world map

Tejada used the Chopped Castaways competition to bring Dominican culinary items to an international audience. Among the dishes she presented during the finale was a dish of braised and stewed Guinea hen in a guava sauce, reimagining traditional flavors that can be found in various forms throughout the Dominican Republic. Her private practice, her style of fusion cooking, and her ability to use varying techniques kept her in good stead throughout the competition.

She joins other local talents who have been making inroads in international food competitions. A Dominican chef has officially been awarded a place in the prestigious 100 Best Pizza Awards 2026. Francis Peña, the executive chef at Casa Gascue in the National District, was ranked 88th among all the pizza makers in the world. The Best Pizza Awards gala ceremony took place on 24 June 2026 in Milan, Italy. Chef Peña was included among the 50 Top Pizza in Latin America for his artisanal, long-fermentation dough techniques.

Along these same lines, Dominican celebrito chef Ines Paez, widely known as Chef Tita, was recently included in the 50 Best Discovery listing. In the North Coast beach town of Sosúa, Chef Tita is making waves for the cuisine at the beachfront restaurant, Aguají by Chef Tita, located within the luxury hotel The Ocean Club (a Luxury Collection Resort). The global ranking praised Aguají for its high-end “New Dominican Cuisine” (Nueva Cocina Dominicana), highlighting how Chef Tita rescues ancestral flavors and utilizes fresh, locally sourced seafood and ingredients from small Dominican farmers.
